Johnny Depp and Sweeney Todd

If you read my post just a few down about movies and the difference seeing them on the big screen versus a television on DVD, you’ll see I’m still very much a fan of the big screen. I get much more caught up in a movie when I’m watching it on a large screen, with surround sound and action going all around me.

I had mentioned Pirates of the Caribbean 3 as being the movie we saw, but I must confess, it was the second film that captured me more than the first or the third. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest was brilliant. There was so much humor and lightness in the film, and Johnny Depp captured Captain Jack Sparrow so well in that. I love when he was captured by the tribesman, and he starts to escape. The entire next series of events catapulted us into stitches of laughter. Whether it was his trying to avoid his captures will still tied to the pole, or the rolling bone cages, it was such a memorable segment, and probably one of my favorite Johnny Depp moments.

Johnny is known for playing eccentric characters, but it’s when he’s showing his lighter side in the Captain Jack Sparrow movies, that I think he’s at his peak. While I enjoyed his take on Willy Wonka, I prefer to compare the Pirates movies 1 through 3. A fun little tidbit for you, I was down at Walt Disney World on vacation last week, and they have his replica added into the Pirates of the Caribbean ride.

Johnny Depp was a name I started hearing with his television spot on Twenty One Jump Street, but I was caught up in other shows at the time. It truly wasn’t until his Captain Jack Sparrow movies that I realized what I’d been missing all this time. He could charm you, seduce you and make you laugh all within moments.

If I had to choose my other favorite Johnny Depp moment in a movie, it would have to be when everyone has come to Davy Jone’s Locker on the “flip side” to save Captain Jack Sparrow. He’s hallucinating a bit, and isn’t sure if it’s real. He goes on to list that one tried to kill him, one wanted him dead, and was anyone there actually because they were happy to see him. It was such a great moment, and fun. As you can tell, I enjoy the laughter that comes along with his character. While my two favorite Johnny Depp moments are found in Pirates movies, both the second and third, it is the second movie that tickles my funny bone the most, and hence my favorite!

Right now, Johnny Depp is about to be seen in the much anticipated Sweeney Todd. You can visit the official Sweeney Todd movie site here, which is a Tim Burton film. This won’t be the first time these two have paired up to make movie magic, and it probably won’t be the last. In Sweeney Todd, the story is based around a barber who kills his customers, and then his lover cooks them up in dishes. Sounds a little different, but then Johnny Depp is known for taking on eccentric characters and nailing them. This movie includes music, action and mayhem. Make sure you add it to your wish list, as it’s out on Christmas Day. If you’d like to learn more, you can check out Sweeney Todd on MySpace. You may want to get yourself a haircut before seeing this film! I’m sure this will be a big hit this year, as Johnny Depp is the man of the year!

My dad falls asleep in front of movies at home. But put him in a theater and he is focused!

I’m looking forward to Sweeney Todd, just because I never got to see it as a musical.

Speaking of dad’s falling asleep, that’s what mine did during “Pirates 2″. I almost followed him, but I had 64 oz. of Diet Coke flowing through my system.
